Baseball was one of the few sports that thrived in the 1930's.

Muhammad Ali, a famous boxer once exclaimed, “ Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” This illustrates that each and every day should be experienced at its fullest. In addition, Ali’s statement connects to sports in the 1930s because people were devastated with various problems such as The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl; therefore, they needed to have a way to escape. Sports were a good inspiration. For example, sports such as baseball, boxing, and pro football had a positive impact on the people in the 1930s. Although there were a lot of problems in the 1930s, sports teams and players made a huge jolt.
In other words, baseball came alive in the 1930s. In the 1930s there were a lot of rising baseball stars, such as Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. According to the article, The Golden Age Of Baseball: The 1930s states that the 1930s baseball season consisted of excitement like Ruth and Gehrig both hitting 40 or more home runs(Johnson 1). These two players were some of the most famous players in the game in the 1930s. What also came alive in the 1930s is the first baseball hall of fame, which started in 1939. The first players to be inducted into the hall of fame was Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson were the first five players that were in the baseball hall of fame(Johnson 1). The New York Yankees were one of the most popular teams in the 1930s as well. According to Yankees Timeline in the 1930s, it states that “ a franchise-record crowd of 81,841 attends a doubleheader sweep of the Boston Red Sox( yankees.com 1). Many people cherished and used baseball as entertainment. Baseball was one of the most impactful sports in the 1930s. In this case, Boxing gave a kick out of the 1930s. Joe Louis was one of the most famous boxers in the 1930s. According to Joe Louis history, it states that “Joe Louis rose up through the ranks of amateur and professional boxing to become the world heavyweight champion, a title he held from 1937 to 1949(History.com Editors 1).” He was one of the best heavyweight boxers in the 1930s. Sixto Escobar was one of the hardest punching boxers. “ A rugged fighter with a hard punch, Escobar became the first Puerto Rican to win a world title when he KO'd Baby Casanova in 1934 to win the NBA bantamweight title(History.com Editors 1).” Sixto Escobar was one of the more tough and hard fighting boxers. Boxing was important in the 1930s. For example, “Boxing in the 1930s was affected by one of the biggest economic struggles in the history of the United States: the depression era”(History.com Editor 1). Because of the suffering American economy, many boxers were offered lower amounts of money causing them to not box with passion. Boxing helped people through the tough times, especially during the dust bowl and the depression era. By all means, the NFL was started to entertain people during harsh times. Many teams strived in the 1930s. There were about 11 NFL teams in the 1930s. Such as the Brooklyn Dodgers, Newark Tornadoes and the Providence Steam Roller. These teams helped bring people together and love the sport of football. Some players also impacted the way people thought about sports such as Arnie Herber and Dan Fortmann. Herbers “career interrupted briefly by World War II, Herber led the NFL in passing three times. He threw 81 touchdowns and totaled more than 8,000 yards through the air.” Fortmann was another really inspiring player, “the ninth-round pick went from obscurity to a Hall of Fame career as an offensive lineman with the Chicago Bears. Fortmann was a six-time All-Pro team member(Wright 1).” Players in the 1930s had a bigger impact on their community than the team alone. Football helped people with entertainment and enjoyment. In conclusion, All though there were a lot of problems in the 1930s, sports teams and players made a huge jolt. Many baseball teams and players came alive in the 1930s as well as boxers getting a good kick out of the sport. The NFL wanted to join in on the fun by starting to grow more popular. Therefore, sports had a positive impact on people in the 1930s. Players and teams helped people through the dust bowl and depression era. Baseball, Pro football, and boxing became very important in the 1930s. |
